This course focuses on Music performance, theory and development. Past students have benefited from our individual and group centered cooperative learning approach.
Students put on a number of performances throughout the year in the Academy and in the community which give them the opportunity to use their new skills and gain experience.
Minor awards, externally accredited music practical and theoretical grade exams 1-4, elementary, preliminary and preparatory (RIAM) piano exams.
48 weeks full time. September – August
The course is open to people with a keen interest in music with a willingness to learn and develop all aspects of music from beginner level upwards. Previous musical experience welcome.
Music Appreciation (3N0595) QQI
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to listen to and actively appreciate music. It is designed to develop essential learning skills such as listening, recall, concentration and recognition.
Music Technology (5N1640) QQI
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge and skill and competence in music technology, combining practical application and appreciation.
Career Plannning (4N21060) QQI
The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to participate in the workplace for a limited time, to carry out work-related tasks while under supervision and to apply their learning to plans for the future.
Teamworking (4N1169) QQI
The purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to act as an effective member of a team in a musical context – completing team-related tasks under instruction, while taking responsibility for own activities and actions.
Music Theory Grades 1-4 (ABRSM)
To equip the learner with the basic principles of music theory to enable progression in performance, composition and musical analysis. (Externally Accredited by Associated Boards of the Royals Schools of Music)
First Instrument Practical (Grades 1-4)
To equip the learner with key skills to achieve a musical performance. Instruments include Voice, Piano-Keyboards, Guitar, Bass, Brass, Drums. (Externally accredited by ABRSM, TCL, LCL, RIAM and Rock School.)
Music Performance (Ensemble Playing)
The Purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge skill and competence to perform music in a variety of contexts. Developing listening skills, Time keeping, Following and giving direction, Dynamic awareness Ensemble interaction How to organise and conduct a rehearsal, Perform in a variety of styles Perform a number of genres.
Piano-Keyboard (Preliminary/Beginners )
Acquire skills to achieve a musical performance in the context of an ensemble and solo performance. Apply music theory in practice and improve aural awareness. (Taught in group sessions in the Piano Lab)
Traditional Irish Music
This module introduces the student to the various structures and forms of Traditional Irish music. Students learn tunes on tin whistle and learn to write their own tunes.
