About | Music Mash Up

An Introduction to Irish Traditional Music with interactive listening games and collaborative composition-(suitable for musicians and non-musicians)

As an Irish Traditional musician Jason Turk has placed multiple times in the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil and has toured extensively around the world particularly the US and Germany.

The aim of the workshop will be to give an introduction to what makes Irish Traditional music different from other genres.
Traditional music is an aural tradition (learned by listening). To take focus away from being onscreen a large part of the workshops will be done with eyes closed and participants will learn to use their ears critically. Just by listening participants will learn to identify different tune types and different ornamentation as well as participating in a wide variety of music listening games. Answers will be given by hand signals with eyes closed so while being engaging it will also be very inclusive and non-competitive.
Participants will also collaborate on the composition of a new tune together. This will be performed by Jason while participants will be encouraged to suggest the notes and rhythms.

Event details: The workshops are aimed at the 13-18 year old age bracket. They will be held online at 2:30pm and 3.30pm on Saturday 12th June. Length approximately 45 mins. Links to the workshops will be provided after booking.
Booking: The workshops are free of charge but booking is requested as spaces are limited. Bookings will be taken on a first come first served basis. Please email jasonturk@corkacademyofmusic.ie to reserve a place. There will be no more places allocated after 5pm on Thursday 10th June
